#MusicMonday: James Brown – Out Of Sight

We’re currently reviewing each episode of HBO’s newest drama series The Deuce on our weekly podcast, and one of the best parts of the show 3 episodes in is the soundtrack. The Deuce takes place in early 1970s NYC, which means the soundtrack is jam packed with songs from the 60s and 70s, included this week’s Music Monday pick: Out of Sight by James Brown. Have a great day on purpose everybody.

Trailer Alert: Curb Your Enthusiasm Season 9

Few shows are as outrageously funny as Curb Your Enthusiasm, and even though it’s been 6 years to the day since the show last aired, it’s clear that nothing has changed. Curb has aged gracefully, and funny is funny, so I can’t imagine the time off equaling any kind of drop in quality. Plus, our best friend Bryan Cranston joined the cast as Larry’s therapist! Curb premieres Sunday, October 1st.

Game Of Thrones Confirmed The Rightful Heir To The Iron Throne In The Season 7 Finale ‘The Dragon & The Wolf’

Photo: TIME

*Spoilers below. Although if you haven’t watched the season 7 finale yet, you probably shouldn’t’ even be on the internet.

If you’ve read any of George R.R. Martin’s books (which I haven’t, but I’m surrounded by friends who have so I get all the juicy info) then you’ve known for awhile that Jon Snow is a Targaryen. What we didn’t know was that he was THE Targaryen, and is the rightful heir to the Iron Throne as Rhaegar Targaryen’s oldest male son. Gilly alluded to it a few episodes back when she and Sam were getting ready to leave the Citadel, but we got confirmation last night as Sam told Bran about the transcript he translated and 3 eyed raven Bran was able to go back in time and visually confirm it. The switch from the books is that Jon Snow is Aegon Targaryen in the show while Aegon was Jon’s older brother in the books (at least as far as Mr. Martin has written them). In the books, Aegon was supposedly murdered by The Mountain, but seeing as Aegon is Jon Snow in the show, that’s obviously not possible. It’s an enormous revelation, and Game of Thrones is a special brand of deranged for confirming that Jon Snow is a Targaryen in a voiceover while we watch Jon and Daenerys make incest love.

There was A LOT more that happened in the finale, and we’ll be talking about later in the week during our TV Club podcast. We’ll miss you Game of Thrones. Please come back soon.

Game of Thrones Creators Announced Their New Show ‘Confederate’ & It’s Getting Exactly The Reaction You’d Expect

The creators of HBO’s hit medieval fantasy “Game of Thrones” have their next show lined for the premium cable network, but this one has no dragons or an undead army of white walkers. David Benioff and Dan Weiss, who adapted “Game of Thrones” from George R.R. Martin’s “A Song of Ice and Fire” books, will write and direct an original series called “Confederate,” HBO said on Wednesday.

The show is set in an alternative reality in a nation where slavery is still legal and southern U.S. states have seceded. HBO said the series “chronicles the events leading to the Third American Civil War.”

It will explore perspectives including freedom fighters, slave hunters, politicians, journalists and abolitionists on both sides of the divide, HBO said in a statement. “Confederate” is a world away from the dragons, undead armies and magic in the medieval setting of “Game of Thrones,” where warring factions scheme and battle for control over the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros. – NBC News

HBO’s response to the social media backlash

People are UPSET about this news from Benioff, Weiss & HBO, and it’s the least surprising thing in the world. Last time I checked the creators behind TV and movies were allowed to make controversial content, and while it’s terrible to picture an alternate reality where the South won the Civil War & slavery was still legal, it shouldn’t be lost that this is a TV show idea. It’s just as much a fantasy as Game of Thrones is. I’d also like to see how all these people who are up in arms reacted to the release of The Man in the High Castle. Last time I  checked season 3 was premiering later this year, and Germany winning World War II and taking over the world isn’t exactly the most lighthearted subject matter.

The biggest problem I have with the constant backlash on social media is that once they win i.e. if Confederate gets canned, the backlash will never stop. People will always find something to get upset about until we won’t be allowed to say, do and most importantly create anything. Is our nation’s history fucked up? Yup, but that shouldn’t stop people from examining it and creating new things. I hope Confederate gets made, because I will watch the hell out of it.

Games Of Thrones Season 7 Is Unsurprisingly Now The Most Watched Premiere In HBO History

The “Game of Thrones” Season 7 premiere broke ratings records on HBO Sunday night.

The episode drew 16.1 million total viewers, including 10.1 million who watched on the linear channel and the rest coming from DVR and streaming. That represents an incredible 50% increase from last year’s premiere, when the show premiered in the spring when TV viewership is typically higher than the summer. That also makes the episode the most-watched season premiere for any HBO series to date. The Season 7 premiere also saw the highest number of concurrent viewers across the streaming services HBO Go and HBO Now. – Variety

It looks like the decision to push Game of Thrones into a summer release was a smart move, as the show absolutely destroyed HBO ratings records last night. The best part? GOT seems to be reaching a creative highpoint as well, as the last three episodes have been some of the best offerings to date. Any time you can increase your viewership by 50% from one season to the next, you know you’re doing something right. Since it’s pretty much the only show on for July and August, I have to imagine this ratings trend will continue throughout the season.

Trailer Alert – The Deuce

Have you ever wanted to watch a TV show about the rise of porn in 1970s New York created by one of the mind behinds The Wire & starring James Franco? Well holy hell, may I present you The Deuce. When HBO and David Simon team up, something beautiful comes out of it (see The Wire, Generation Kill, Treme & Show Me A Hero) and if this trailer is a preview of what we can expect with The Deuce this fall, then I’m all in. By all accounts, New York City in the 70s and 80s was a fascinating and frightening time. I can’t imagine focusing on porn and prostitution from that era is going to shine a light on a lot of productive members of society, but it should be make for enthralling TV. The Deuce premiers September 10th.
