Trailer Alert – Triple 9

A gang of criminals and corrupt cops plan the murder of a police officer in order to pull off their biggest heist yet across town. – IMDB

Triple 9 has a pretty simple plot, and then you take a look at the cast and it should blow your goddamn socks off. Kate Winslet, Gal Gadot, Aaron Paul, Woody Harrelson, Casey Affleck, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Norman Reedus, Anthony Mackie & Michael Kenneth Williams. This movie could be 100 hours long and you still wouldn’t have enough screen time for all that talent. This is just one of a few trailers out there for this movie, and each trailer shows the movie through the eyes of a different set of characters. They hype train is about to take off for this movie, and it’s only a little over a month away from hitting theaters. As simple as the plot sounds, you know there’s going to be some twists and turns throughout the movie, and with this cast, I can’t wait.

Trailer Alert: The Leftovers Season 2

The Leftovers was one of my favorite shows last season, and the full trailer for season 2 is long overdue. It was dark, sure, but the acting and writing were great, and it’s nice to see a creator not be afraid to get and stay dark throughout a season. After all, the show IS about people disappearing and no one knowing why. The scenery changes for season 2, as we see some familiar faces arriving in a town called Miracle which somehow hasn’t had any departures yet. We’re also introduced to some new characters, and while the first half of the trailer shows most of the characters pretty happy, we know bad news is right around the corner. Season 2 premiers this fall.

Breaking Bad Finally Wins Best Drama

65th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards - Press Room

It’s weird seeing the cast of Breaking Bad with smiles on their faces, but if there were ever a time to smile, it was last night. The show had been nominated three times before in the Best Drama category, but the Golden statue had always eluded Vince Gilligan and company. Last night, all that changed, and how surreal it was to watch Hank and Jesse and Mike and Walter hug it out for the whole world to see. Well deserved is an understatement, as the writing, directing and acting on this show has been superb for 5 years now. These past 8 episodes (the finale airing next Sunday) have been among the shows best, so I wouldn’t be surprised to see the cast share the stage one last time at the Emmys next September.

Spike Jonze’s “Her” Trailer

Is there anything Joaquin Phoenix can’t do? Her is a semi futuristic love story between a struggling writer (Phoenix) and his new at home computer operating system (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Phoenix’s character is fresh off a break up, and he finds solace in the virtual company of his new “Siri” like computer system. If Scarlet Johansson’s voice kept me company after a bad breakup, I’d probably fall in love with it too. This is definitely a unique plot, but with Jonze at the helm, I’m excited for what it could be. Her hits theaters November 20th.

P.S. According to the Film Society of Lincoln Center, Her will be closing the NY Film Festival, which runs from September 27th-October 13th. Other films screening at the festival include Captain Phillips, the action thriller starring Tom Hanks and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which we posted last week, starring Ben Stiller.

He was born James Gandolfini, but he’ll always be Tony Soprano to us. Fly away sweet prince, fly away and be free.
