Trailer Alert – Dead Men Tell No Tales

In Bill Paxton’s name! I’m still not recovered from the new Alien trailer and Disney comes from the ceiling with a doozy of a second trailer for the new Pirates movie. Listen, I hear all the people out there saying “who asked for a new Pirates movie?”, “it’s just a money grab”, “Matt is super handsome and his blogs are always super funny.” I’ve heard it all. All that those types of comments tell me is that they are not invested in the characters. I’ve been engrossed in the Pirates-verse since day one. Actually, longer than day one, that ride was and is my favorite ride at Disney World, hand down. Can’t we just enjoy a fun movie with pirates and an excellent score? Seriously though, Han Zimmer’s score is the stuff of legends. Right up there with John Williams and Star Wars.

Trailer Alert – Alien: Covenant

Brace yourself.

WOAH. I thought I was pumped after seeing the first teaser, but then I saw the prologue and thought, “ok, now i’m hyped”. BUT THIS? After seeing this I feel like I could dive out of an airplane with no parachute and survive. I feel like I could run clean through a cement wall. Beat the shit out of a bear and its cubs. stop a moving car with my mind….ok, you get the picture, i’m LIT off this trailer. It basically confirms everything I said in the last blog, and on the Make Movies Great Again podcast, but added the “shit hitting the fan factor” that we have all been waiting for.

And, what? Wait a second? How did that wheat get there? Hmm, that Alien ship sure looks familiar. How did it get there? …

Trailer Alert: Five Came Back

There are few things I love more than documentaries (Parmesan goldfish, the sense of sight) which is why the trailer for Five Came Back, a docu-series about famous filmmakers who served in World War II, is right up my alley. The series follows five filmmakers: John Ford, William Wyler, John Huston, Frank Capra, and George Stevens, all of whom served in World War II and brought back with them stories to inform and inspire the American people.

Tracing the ways patriotism and industry existed side by side, and the role Hollywood played in mobilizing and shaping the consciousness of a divided America, Bouzereau and his team gathered over 100 hours of archival and newsreel footage; watched over 40 documentaries and training films directed and produced by the five directors during the war; and studied 50 studio films and over 30 hours of outtakes and raw footage from their war films. – comingsoon.net
The five brave filmmakers and their work are brought back to life through the voices of five modern filmmakers: Steven Spielberg, Francis Ford Coppola, Paul Greengrass, Guillermo Del Toro and Lawrence Kasdan. The series was produced by Spielberg and based on the best selling novel Five Came Back: A Story of Hollywood and the Second World War by Mark Harris. If there’s one guy I trust when it comes to World War II and Hollywood history, it’s Spielberg, and this series looks like it was incredibly well done. The series premieres March 31st exclusively on Netflix.

Alien: Covenant has a prologue short film

I’m going to try an keep calm throughout this recap of what we just watched, but forgive me if I go off a bit off the rails. I’ve been so excited for this movie, I can barely contain myself.

Ok, so what does this little prologue short film tell us about Alien: Covenant? For one, James Franco is the captain of this mission. It will be interesting to see what kind of captain he is.

Michael Fassbender is back as an android, and in this short we see him playing Walter. A totally new andriod. (he will also be reprising his role as David).

Danny McBride, as always, steals the show. He waits until Captain Branson (Franco) hits the sleep chamber before throwing on a cowboy hat and leading the crew in pre-sleep festivities.

We now know that the Covenant ship is on a “large-scale colonization” mission, which means a few things. One, this storyline is independent of Prometheus; although I obviously suspect a crossover of characters with Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender’s casted into this movie. And two, this adds a new aspect to the Alien franchise…significant others. It looks as though the crew on this mission are largely husbands and wives tasked with colonizing a new planet. This will surely invoke all types of interesting survival instincts when the shit inventively hits the fan.

Speaking of, how about the choking bit in this short?! I was half-expecting a tiny xenomorph to launch itself from her chest, but then Walter comes over and defuses the tension. If this is just a glimpse of things to come, then I think it’s safe to say Ridley Scott has another terrifyingly suspenseful thriller on his hands.

Lastly, I think we have found our protagonist. Katherine Waterston (you might recognize her from Fantastic Beasts) is playing a character named ‘Daniels’ in Covenant. So, what does this short tell us about her character? For one, she’s the take charge type. She swoops in and gives a chilling speech about the coming mission. And she does it without being called upon, she volunteers to give a few words. So she’s obviously the leader-type, even though she might not be in the role of a leader (where have we seen that before?). But, the most telling thing about her character is that she is alone. Yeah she’s with the crew, but look how she is placed among them. Centered, with space on either side of her while the rest of the crew is cuddled up with their significant others. Does she have an S/O on this mission? Doesn’t look like it. All I know is when shit starts going south it’s every man and woman for themselves.

Trailer Alert – The House

Will Ferrell, Amy Poehler, Jason Mantzoukas, Nick Kroll and a shit-ton of other funny people come together to make this unique and original comedy. Listen, all the movie studio had to do was say “Ferrell and Poehler” and I would have been in line for tickets. Adding a “This is the End”-esque ensemble cast is just overkill. Overkill that I welcome with open arms.

Jason Mantzoukas, better known as Rafi from ‘The League’, is finally getting a major role in a comedy, which is great news for movie go-ers. He and Nick Kroll have been floating in and out of every major comedy of the last couple years and 2017 is poised to be their true “break out” year. I truly believe they can lead in their own movies and ‘The House’ should help solidify my claim.

This looks like a genuinely funny movie and I can’t wait to laugh my dick off at the theater.

Trailer Alert – Dead Men Tell No Tales

If you thought I was excited for a new Transformers movie, it doesn’t even come close to how excited I am for a new Pirates movie. Kind of shitty that the 4th one didn’t have Orlando Bloom, so i’m glad to see him back in this one.

PS – This Cash song is suddenly super popular for movie trailers.

Optimus has betrayed us -Transformers: The Last Knight, trailer 2

As a side note, this trailer will get replayed during the 2nd quarter of the Super Bowl with added footage.

At this point in the Transformers franchise do we even need humans? They are as about as useful as a screen door on a submarine (Not my joke, but i’ll use it as such). The only reason Spike was of use to the Autobots in the 1986 movie was because he had a damn exoskeleton. And don’t get me started on that pussy Daniel. Get rid of the humans and give me more Transformers, please and thank you.

What does this trailer say about the movie? It means one thing, Optimus is going down and it’s Hot Rod’s time to shine. I couldn’t be happier. Optimus dies, passes on the Matrix of Leadership straight to Hot Rod (FUCK Ultra Magnus) and he takes this franchise in a new direction.

ONE SMALL REQUEST. More 80s music in the movies to come…

Trailer Alert – Colossal

I’m not sure what to make of this flick. I would have never in a million years thought Anne Hathaway would do a monster movie like this. Sure, she’s was Selina Kyle in The Dark Knight Rises, but Cat Woman is a super iconic role. This just seems like a throwaway sci-fi monster movie. I hope it proves me wrong, because I LOVE me some sci-fi monster movies. What do you think?
