DIRK – The Dallas Mavericks and veteran big man Dirk Nowitzki have hammered out the framework of a new contract that sets Nowitzki up to earn $40 million over the next two seasons and play until age 40, according to league sources.
Sources told ESPN that some of the finer contract details are still being worked through, but the broad financial terms have been nailed down in a deal constructed to pay Nowitzki an annual salary in the $20 million range that is more commensurate with his Hall of Fame stature after playing on an ultra-steep discount for the past two seasons.
While the entire NBA world is still buzzing about Kevin Durant setting the world on fire and joining the Warriors, I’m only concerned with one thing: Dirk Nowitzki is going to be a Dallas Maverick for life. The NBA’s 6th all time leading scorer signed a new two year $40 million deal, all but making up for his ridiculous 3 year $25 million deal he signed in 2014. Is it a lot of money? Yes, but if anybody deserves to get paid it’s Dirk, who has passed up the most money in NBA history to help the Mavs build a great team only to be let down every single year. With Durant signing with the Warriors, it’s all but a foregone conclusion that they’ll be in the NBA finals next year, so I’m glad Dirk is getting paid and that he’ll close out his career as a Maverick. If Dirk plays both years of his new contract, he’ll join Kobe Bryant as the second player in NBA history to play 20 years for the same franchise.
