Greg Oden Joins the “All Asshole” Team

Ohio – NBA player Greg Oden was arrested in Lawrence, Ind. this morning, accused of punching his ex-girlfriend.

The incident happened around 3:30 a.m. in the 7200 block of Maple Bluff Place, according to a Lawrence Police Department report.

Officers arrived at the home to find the victim crying and lying across a bed holding her face, police said. A woman described as the victim’s best friend first told officers what happened, police said.

“He punched her in the face,” the witness said, according to the report.

The victim initially was “uncooperative,” police said.

The victim’s best friend, police said, told the woman, “There isn’t that much love in the world. You need to tell that he punched you in the face.”

Police “observed blood, swelling to the nose, lacerations to the forehead and nose area of the victim’s face,” according to the report. They also “observed blood on the sofa and floor in the sitting area. (They) observed (blood) on the living room carpet (and) dirt from a flower pot that was knocked over.”

My Thoughts

Talk about a real winner, right ladies? Not only is Greg Oden a failure on the basketball court, but apparently he’s a failure as a human being too. There goes any “injury sympathy” anyone ever had for Greg Oden. Personally I never felt bad for him. Oh you got paid money to sit on the bench and watch basketball? Boo hoo. Take better care of your body and maybe it wouldn’t break down like you were an old man with osteoporosis. Or chalk it up as a loss and do something productive with your life. If you keep breaking your hand, foot and leg chances are they’re going to keep breaking. Maybe start looking at a different career path. And no, beating up your ex-girlfriend is not a career.

We kind of always knew a lot of athletes were assholes, but the recent string of domestic violence incidents is frightening. The NBA can’t really do anything to Oden because he doesn’t play anymore anyway. But Goodell and the NFL set such a horrible standard for domestic violence punishment that I’m scared to see what the future holds. These athletes really need to clean up their acts, and not because their role models. If you’re a grown man or women and one of these guys are your role model that says a lot more about you than it does them. But for the sake of human decency, I hope we don’t hear any more of these reports.
